Over 3.5 goals means that at the end of the football match the game must have had 4 or more goals scored for the bet to have won, and similar if you bet on under 3.5 goals, the game would have to have ended with under 4 goals for you to have won. So if you back over 3.5 goals you will lose your bet if the final result is 0-0, 1-1, 1-0, 0-1, 2-0, 0-2, 2-1, 1-2, 3-0, and 0-3, and you will win on any other result.
It does not matter what team scores the goals in this market to win, for example team A could win 4-0, team B could win 1-3, or the game could be a 2-2 draw, it does not matter as long as 4 goals or more were scored.
An additional trick when betting on over 3.5 goals is the ability to trade your position, you can really only do this on exchanges such as Betfair, and this is how you do it:
If you have already placed your back bet and the game has started, if an early goal gets scored, the lay price will drop, and you can instantly lay your bet to guarantee profit, or a risk free bet.
If the opposite happens and no goals are being scored within 20 minutes, you can alter your position so you get out for a much smaller loss. Doing it this way at least gives you room to trade whilst the game is being played.
