Why do footballers cover their mouth when talking to each other?

I was watching a live game over the weekend and noticed that the players talking to each other on the pitch covered their mouth. Why do they do this?

I used to think it was because they never wanted people who could lip read know what they are saying to one another. I then remember reading somewhere they do it as the noise is so loud in the stadium and when they talk like that they can hear each other better. So not entirely sure what the main reason is.

I believe it's also to be heard better as in noisy stadiums at can amplify the sound. Football is not tactical enough to bother about lip-reading whereas in a NFL where tactics are a major thing lip-reading has been known to occur in American Football.

I would say Coronavirus but footballers did their mouth covering long before that. To be heard better sounds like a better explanation as when I was once in a club talking to a friend we instantly spoke like this to overcome the loud music.
