How to make crispy shredded beef like the Chinese?

This crispy shredded beef dish is similar to what you will receive from a Chinese takeaway. It also has some added heat to it by using dry red chillies, which gives it an extra kick, and is what most Chinese takeaways do also when making this dish.

Even though this recipe is for beef, it will work exactly the same if you want to replace the beef with either chicken or pork.

How to make crispy shredded beef like the Chinese?

Ingredients

450 Grams of topside beef cut into matchstick size strips
110 Grams of cornflour
2 Cups of vegetable oil
3 Medium sized carrots cut into matchstick size strips
3 Crushed garlic cloves
2 Shredded dry chillies
2 Spring onions cut into 1 inch sections
4 Tablespoons of soy sauce
2 Tablespoons of wine vinegar
6 Teaspoons of sugar
4 Eggs
½ Teaspoon of salt

Start this crispy shredded beef dish by mixing together the cornflour, eggs and salt, and toss the beef in this until all of it has been well coated.

Next heat the vegetable oil in a wok, and stir-fry the beef for around 2 minutes, or until it has all turned crispy. Then remove the beef and place on paper towels, and allow to drain all the oil.

Using the wok again, deep-fry the carrots for around 2 minutes, and then place on paper towels to drain.

Remove most of the oil from the wok, leaving only around 2 tablespoons of oil. Reheat and add the garlic, chillies and spring onion. Stir-fry for around 30 seconds, and then add the sugar, vinegar and soy sauce.

Finally return the carrots and the beef to the wok, toss for a few seconds, and then serve.

I really enjoyed making this dish but may I suggest replacing the sugar with honey, I think that change makes this dish even better and it's what my Chinese takeaway does too, they call it a shredded beef with chilli & honey. Will be doing it again with shredded chicken next time, will avoid it with pork as not a pork lover.

My family and I really enjoyed this shredded beef dish. It was so easy to make and hardly requires much washing up afterwards as really only the wok is used. Ingredients inexpensive too and easy to source. I think we will have this at least once a week now. Very tasty.

Mmm very tasty and in my own personal opinion the dish tasted even better than what I have experienced from takeaways, AND, I must add, it tasted healthier too. The instructions are spot on, followed them to the tee and no issues. Saving this one as will be making this shredded Chinese dish again.

I particularly liked making this Chinese meal due to the simple ingredients but yet such a nice powerful tasting dish.... A lot of Chinese recipes often involve hard to get ingredients but not this shredded beef.
Also great because of the little washing up mess afterwards as your doing everything in 1 wok....

Was enjoyed by all and plans to make it again next weekend....

We added king prawns instead of the beef, and we also added bamboo shoots and water-chestnuts. Tasted really good when done with seafood, and was equally simple to make. Will definitely be cooking it again.

A wonderful recipe for this popular dish we all enjoy to have from our Chinese. No problem with getting any of the ingredients either, all quite low in price, and the amazing thing is that once bought you have so much of most of the ingredients left for future ones to make.

So basically the only real cost is the first time, next time you want to make it all you'll need is the beef, some of the vegetables and then your good to go.

Highly recommended and was enjoyed by the whole family.

Huge thank you for this recipe. Just wanted to review and say that everything worked out really well. It was actually me and my husband who cooked this together seeing as this is his favourite meal from the local takeaway.

We will definitely be cooking it again, however next time I think we will be putting hotter chillies inside, as we both like quite hot dishes, but this would still be perfect for the people who only like not so much heat.

Thanks.
