Gummo was a really odd movie, I am not American but I imagine the director was trying to get across to the viewer how some people live in America, the poorer end of the spectrum.
I never really took anything away from it after watching other than thinking there are really people like what are in this movie, and it just makes us sickening creatures. I also recommend that if you like cats that you avoid this movie as cat torture and hunting feature pretty much from start to finish for some odd reason.
It could have possibly been better if some sort of story had been attached to the movie, but in reality it was filmed in a documentary style jumping from one messed up family to the next.
Other sickening events in the movie (aside from all the cat ones) included turning of a old ladies life support machine after shooting her in the foot with a pellet gun, a brother letting men take advantage of his mentally disabled sister for payments, and a young boy getting his hair washed in a bath whilst drinking a strawberry milkshake, eating spaghetti, and munching on a candy bar.
Gummo is not a movie I would recommend as it wasn't funny or interesting, nor did it shock, not sure what the hell it was!
